Building Stronger Connections: Social Events and Neighbourhood Activities

Strong neighbourhoods aren't accidents. They're built through regular, informal opportunities for people to encounter each other, share experiences, and build relationships. The Leigh Park Initiative organises a range of social events and activities designed to strengthen these connections and create a genuine sense of community.
Research shows that social connection is fundamental to wellbeing. People with strong community ties report better mental health, feel safer, and live longer. Yet in modern life, many people barely know their neighbours. We're working to change that.
Why social activities matter: A street party isn't just a party—it's an opportunity for families living on the same street to meet, for children to play safely together, for older residents to feel part of something. A shared meal brings together people who might not otherwise interact. A community celebration reminds us that we're not isolated individuals but part of something larger.
Our regular social activities include:
- Monthly community meals and social lunches
- Street parties and seasonal celebrations
- Film nights and outdoor cinema events
- Family fun days with games, activities, and entertainment
- Music and performance events
- Coffee mornings and informal gathering spaces
- Intergenerational activities bringing together young and old
We deliberately design events to be inclusive. Most are free or low-cost because we believe everyone should be able to participate regardless of income. We provide transport for people with mobility challenges. We ensure there's something for all ages. We accommodate dietary requirements and accessibility needs.
What makes these events special is that they're genuinely social rather than prescriptive. We provide the space, basic structure, and refreshments, but the real magic happens when residents interact naturally. Friendships form. People discover shared interests. Isolated individuals find connection.
We also listen to what residents want. If people request specific activities or events, we work to make them happen. Some of our most successful initiatives started as suggestions from community members.
Beyond formal events, we maintain informal gathering spaces—the community hub itself serves as a place where people naturally meet, chat, and support each other. Staff create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable simply dropping in.
If you're new to the area and want to meet people, or if you've lived here years but rarely encounter your neighbours, our social activities offer a natural, low-pressure way to build connections. You don't need to be outgoing or already know people—just turn up and you'll be welcomed.
We're also keen to hear ideas for new events or activities. What would bring your street or neighbourhood together? What's missing? Your suggestions genuinely shape our calendar.
