Rubbish

Image of volunteers and the rubbish on July 7th - click for larger imageNo - that isn't a description of our organisation - but of one the things we are interested in! With all the emphasis on recycling and the environment it is easy to forget that not everyone has easy access to the recycling facilities provided by the local authority. Some people do not have access to private transport, or may not be fit enough to manhandle bulky household waste into a vehicle even if they have one. That means paying EDDC to come and take it away, which not everyone can afford.

If you are on a means tested benefit, or elderly/disabled, and you do not have suitable transport to take a bulky household item to the recycling centre, or you cannot afford the cost of the council bulky household waste removal service then we may be able to help you get it to the recycling centre. The service is free to those who can provide evidence of need to us when we call - normally a letter of entitlement to a means tested benefit will be sufficient. We reserve the right to refuse to take items if we feel the resident is able to dispose of them without assistance. Call 01202 889545 for more details.

A big thank you to Timothy Woolford, & Steven Turner fromn EDDC who sent out a couple of rubbish trailers to the Rugby Club car park on 7th July between 9am-12noon. Thank you also to Caroline Harris of DCA who helped us get this scheme off the ground, to those who delivered 450 leaflets to Leigh Park residents, assisted with the collection of rubbish, and of course the many Leigh Park residents who brought their rubbish for recycling. We hope that this scheme will make a contribution to reducing fly-tipping around the estate, which has a proven effect on improving the local environment, enhancing community safety and reducing crime, and that it will improve the accessibility of the council's waste and recycling services to those who are elderly, disabled, without private transport, or on reduced incomes. We hope that we will be doing this again!
